WLUW's Weird Kids Night
Monday, July 9 at darkroom; 9 p.m.; $7
This WLUW event, benefiting the radio station's Wednesday night program Hump Day Dance Party, will undoubtedly tug on your nostalgic heart strings for a time when mohawks (not faux-hawks) and hot pink leggings were more modern than retro. Headliners The Cool Kids bring back the 80's Run DMC-style beats that are much more fit for darkroom's dance floor than mainstream radio.
Soul Sugar
Thursday, July 12 at Butterfly Social Club; 9 p.m.; free
Get over the fact that you'll have to trade in your cash at the door for drink tickets. With an organic cocktail in your hand, you're likely to sweeten up to this Thursday night special, Soul Sugar. DJ Trew runs the rare soul, funk and crate diggers site Groundlift Mag and brings a nice selection of vinyl treats along with weekly guest DJs.
Mr. Oizo
Friday, July 13 at Metro; 9 p.m.; 18+; $10 first 50 tickets, $12 after, $15 at the door; free admittance to Smartbar with ticket purchase
Although you won't hear his name thrown around so often, Mr. Oizo played a big part in shaping French electronic powerhouse Ed Banger Records just as much as his label mates Justice and Daft Punk. Touring to promote his latest release Transexual, Mr. Oizo makes his first Chicago appearance at the Metro. Before his two hour set, catch a screening of Daft Punk's new film "Electroma," the story of two robots quest to become human at Smartbar.
Yo Majesty
Friday, July 13 at Sonotheque; 9 p.m.; $10
Yo Majesty has been compared to Salt N Pepa and any other female rap act to come out in the past 20 years. But truth be told, these three ladies from the F-L-A couldn't be further from their counterparts. For starters, they're gay and proud. They're also known to do whatever they please on stage while belting out dirty rhymes about their lady parts over sonic krunk and club beats. If you have to miss tonight's party, Empty Bottle offers a second chance on Sunday.
Fancy Footwork Tour/We (heart) Chicago fest; Chromeo and Flosstradamus
Saturday, July 14 at Empty Bottle ; 9:30 p.m.; $3 limited tickets, $12
We advise attending all three nights of Turntable Lab's "We (heart) Chicago" fest, but if you can only choose one, this is it. Chromeo keeps the talkbox, synth-tastic songs alive on its second album, Fancy Footwork, and hometown heroes Flosstradamus are so hot that we're waiting to hear one of their jams in a Scion commercial. Chromeo's Myspace page really sums up this fest best: "…20 something blogpoders, 30something burn-out ex-raver, graphic designers and 40 something sistas can all finally party under one roof."
