Editorial Review of Abigail's

Located just a stone's throw from the Metra North line Ravinia stop, Abigail's in Highland Park gives you plenty of reason to spend a night out in the North Shore. The cozy one-room bistro provides a convenient and elegant accompaniment to summer evenings at Ravinia Festival, and warm, satisfying meals for those brutal winter nights.

Owner and chef Michael Paulsen has designed a menu that proves size doesn't matter. Choose between "small," "large," or "neither small nor large" plates, but whatever you choose, be prepared for delicious American comfort food with an upscale twist. Munch on complimentary cheddar biscuits topped with melted cheese and chives as you chew over the uniquely customizable menu. Whether you prefer to share several items among a group or have your own dish, the selection of incrementally sized plates can be tailored to fit any occasion.

Small plate standouts include sauteed feta cheese in a raisin caper pine nut sauce and Buffalo-style rock shrimp with blue cheese dressing. From the large plate list, roasted lemon-rosemary chicken with caramelized Brussels sprouts and potatoes tastes just like Mom made (if your mom happened to be Julia Child). Less sophisticated palates will relish the burger topped with red onion marmalade and Wisconsin sharp cheddar, while sugar addicts will go gaga over dessert items like white wine pear cake and chocolate walnut strudel with vanilla ice cream.

Small but elegant, the dining room echoes the upscale comfort food menu, making Abigail's a place where you can enjoy fine dining, yet feel right at home.

Average cost: $21-$30
