Editorial Review of Dugan's

Dugan's, or Duggan's, depending on which sign you read, is a little out of place in its Greektown home. At 128 S. Halsted, it's probably the only spot within walking distance where you can't get gyros. It is, however, a place to get a drink at 3:30 a.m., after they've finally kicked you out of the Parthenon. The shamrock on the door might suggest an Irish theme, but beyond selling Guinness there's not much to it. Dugan's is a bar, plain and simple, for folks who want to drink, plain and simple. The space itself is beautiful, with 20-odd-foot ceilings and a great deal of room to roam around. A shiny copper-topped bar sits in the middle of the room up front, and a few sports video games sit in back. When it opens in the afternoon, the empty space can be intimidating, but by six o'clock the after-work crowd (a staple) is there and has the place more or less filled. By nine it's full and it can get a little crowded, and those high ceilings make the noise a little much.

There's no food menu, but you can munch on popcorn at the bar and free salami-and-cheese type appetizers in the evening; free pizza is sliced up on Fridays. There are daily beer specials, and a rather large draft selection, with a few others in bottles. Mixed drinks are available too, with all the regular favorites, beer seems to be the order of choice.

Dugan's opens early (noon) on Sundays for sporting events, but for the rest of the week it's a place to have a few drinks after work, serving drinks to people who want them in an unpretentious manner, so everyone seems to leave happy. Beyond its 4 a.m. closing time, not much separates it from any other watering hole.

Here's a tip: Head in at 3:30 for Jeopardy! and the bartender will let you in on the Final Jeopardy pool. You don't get to see the category first, but it's only five bucks to enter, and you get your money back if nobody wins. Good times.
