Steven Daiter is actually running two photography galleries in one. Suite 404's Daiter Gallery tends toward the classics, with retrospectives of influential old-timers like Lee Balterman. Daiter Contemporary in Suite 408, however, features cutting-edge, contemporary work by young and mid-career artists.
Blending seamlessly, the two galleries reflect Daiter's mission to attract River North's two major customer bases—the traditionalists and the thrill-seekers. The exposed brick and rafters say urban loft, and the grey display walls say mini-museum. The staff is on hand to provide insight and peak your interest in purchasing the work on sale for about $1,000-$5,000.
Touching on everything from the political to sexually provocative gelatin prints and photo-based collages, the gallery aims to provoke discussion and shake your preconceptions. At the same time, the gallery's archives and bookshelves provide ample opportunity to peruse the work of celebrated shutterbugs like Harry Callahan and Barbara Crane. Its publications highlight iconic and overlooked figures who embody twentieth century styles like the Chicago School and the Bauhaus.
