Editorial Review of R.H. Love Galleries

Sick of shopping and ready to feel some love on the cash money millionaires' strip of Chicago? That's where this art-for-shoppers gallery comes in quite handy. Glide past a somewhat oblivious doorman and take the elevator to floor two. The slick glass door of this gallery greets you, and in you go. Here you'll find artists ranging from colonial times to mid-20th century, and all of them have one thing in common: They've been left out of art history even though they seem to have worked alongside the greats. Richard H. Love is dedicated to finding these artists, collecting their work and presenting it in a posh environment.

Soft carpeting, a plethora of couches and armchairs and gold-framed paintings make this place feel completely over-the-top to some, or charming and glitzy to others. Don't be surprised if none of the names look familiar, yet many of the styles—impressionism, post-impressionism, colonial—all ring a (visual) bell. A fine example is Nebraska-born artist Augustus Dunbier (1888–1977), who Love recently "discovered." Dunbier was a post-impressionist who painted portraits, landscapes and still-lifes and worked alongside the likes of American art star John Sloan, but never became famous. The gallery exhibits many others like him, such as Mark Fisher (1841–1923), who supposedly painted using the "broken color technique that would be labeled impressionistic" later on.

Need some time alone with your art? There’s a private viewing room that resembles a Southern aristocrat's spare room. In case you forget the importance of what you're looking at, the gallery displays framed ads from top mags like ArtNews in the space, perhaps hoping visitors will mistake them for reviews. It’s just one more thing you won't see at the Art Institute down the street.
