Editorial Review of Printworks Gallery

One of Chicago's most loved galleries is Printworks, an intimate room in the River North that specializes in works on paper. Its small showing space, roughly 400 square feet, houses artistic treasures from Chicago's most canonized and esteemed artists, from Leon Golub to Ed Paschke to Tony Fitzpatrick.

The scale of the space make sense for the type of media shown. The drawings, collages, etchings and artists books that make up the print genre are immediate, intimate and typically small works that require a close look. While there is always a special exhibition of works mounted to the walls, hundreds more treasures lay in drawers. Just ask one of the famously friendly owners, Bob Hiebert or Sidney Block, who are usually sitting at the desk in the front, for assistance going through them.

Audrey Nifenegger, local author of the best-selling "The Time Traveler's Wife," regularly exhibits her drawings and artist's books at Printworks.
