Architecture buffs no longer need to crane their necks to catch a glimpse of exquisite structure design. Extension Gallery brings the grandiosity of architecture to a space that shifts perspective and scales it to a size in a way that's easy on the eyes. Located within the seemingly endless row of art studios on Pilsen's South Halsted Street, this free-admission gallery transforms its narrow, two-tiered home with monumental installations.
Extension features works by both national and international architects and aims to explore the functional, as well as the aesthetic, impact that architecture has upon society and the environment. Stark white walls and walnut-hued hardwood floors, flanked with steep, iron staircases on either end, allow patrons to view works from multiple viewpoints. Windows located at the front and back of the space usher in natural lighting; on occasion, the gallery incorporates its grassy backyard into installations to demonstrate the commingling of structure and nature.
Exhibits run for three months, and openings coincide with Pilsen's "2nd Fridays," a monthly reception for galleries participating in the Chicago Art District's free event.
